I think that MCD and MCHH should be seperated. I guess that the government still don’t understand what the needs between Deaf and HH are pretty different.
If the future MCDHH director happens to be Deaf, then he/she tends to give more fund or service to Deaf people over HH people. It will be same problem with the future MCDHH director who is HH person. In other words, Deaf and HH people will fight over the government-funded money depending on the DEAF or HH director.
I personnally disliked the concept of a person with “condition’ should be a priority rather than Deaf as a whole human being. I won’t be surprised that next five years from now, the title of MCDHH has to be replaced under the political pressures of the Late-Deafened group want to be recognized by adding “LD” to it and then Deaf Blind group want to be recognized by adding “DB” to be included in the title of the agency. It will be MCDLDDB.
Please look at the titles of Black or Hispanic orgainzations. Did you find the title of “DBLLBLDBRLBR” (Dark Black, Light Black, Dark Brown and Dark Brown) No, Black orgainzations does not support the important priority of person with “condition” over the civil or human rights.
What’s about “SACAMALS” (South American, Central American, Mexican, Latinoand Spanish). I can’t find any good reason if “SACAMALS” comes into a reality but it never happened. If true, then what’s something wrong with “Hispanic” ? Sadly, it happened with “disability-condition” title that deprives the Deaf Culture. What’s the problem with “Deaf” or MCD ?.
MCDHH is the first resource in the state for many people and we need an agency that is visible with the word “Deaf” in it – often times we (community providers or advocates) go out in the community and give MCDHH as a resource for agencies and people who are at a loss how to provide support.
It’s a “first stop” agency and we need to maintain that image.
“DEAF” needs to visible where people will seek resources for assistance. MCDHH is the DEAF center where resources will help guide people to the right places for information such as schools, agencies, clubs, etc.
David Ennis – I understand your concern and yes people may push for political correct name. We need to make sure “DEAF” stays as it is and we don’t give in for their sake such as changing to MCDDBHHHILFD……
2. MCDHH is a history and shall not be destoryed.
3. MCDHH educates those who know nothing or little about Deafness

MCDHH has Deaf leaders who lead by examples and advocate for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
